Expressing Solidarity with the Palestinian People Is Hardly Sufficient to Stop the Bloodbath

Julius Arscott, executive member of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU), posted the following recently on Facebook:

Union strong at the National March for Palestine in DC!

UAW, Newsguild, CWA, IATSE, NWU, and UFT members marched alongside 300,000 people to demand a ceasefire and an end to taxpayer-funded genocide in Gaza.

I made the following comment:

Although this is better than nothing, it is more symbolic than anything else and will not stop the bloodbath. Colombian miners, on the other hand, who call on the Colombian government to prevent the export of coal and other minerals to Israel, support an option with the potential to disrupt the Israeli capitalist economy. Such a policy, if engaged in internationally, would be much more effective than symbolic gestures.
